Our four Virtual Workshops on the World of Virtual Work are designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need to successfully move from working in an office environment to working remotely from colleagues, managers and regular office environment.

1.  World of Virtual Work 1:  Working Essentials – 3 x 1 hour sessions

Benefits of attending this workshop:  understand the challenges of moving to remote working; agree the ‘ground rules’ with your manager; learn how to structure your day; techniques for staying focused and productive; learn new tools to be effective in meetings; develop skills to help you continue to feel part of a team; create an environment that maintains your personal well-being.

Content:  The workshop looks at the challenge of working remotely from the three perspectives of:

  • Productivity – How to get things done. Setting up your workspace, getting organized, making the most of the available technology, setting personal goals, monitoring your progress, maintaining ‘separation’ of work and home.
  • Connectivity – Staying connected, and keeping in touch with your colleagues, managers and the retaining a sense of being part of the company.
  • Wellbeing – Maintaining your physical and mental health is an essential part of working remotely. Separating work and home life, maintaining contact with others, looking after your diet, building a support networks and knowing when, where and how to get help.

Duration:  3 hours.

Dates:  per client needs.  WBC will arrange groups, or the workshop can be in-house.

2.  World of Virtual Work 2:  Team Working Essentials – 3 x 1 hour sessions

Benefits of attending this workshop:  help your team to develop its effectiveness in the world of virtual work; reduce tensions created by remote working within the team; avoid common pitfalls that divide teams; learn how to set goals and allocate tasks when face-to-face meetings are not possible; check your team has everything it needs to succeed when working remotely.

Content:  This workshop looks at the essential skills for a team member, with further emphasis on how working remotely impacts both the team members and the Team Manager.  The subjects covered include:

  • A compelling direction – what is the purpose of the team, what are its boundaries, what is the challenge and why does it matter?
  • A strong structure – who is in the team, how diverse is it, what is the balance of social & technical skills? Respect, avoiding ‘groupthink’ and effective task assignment.
  • A supporting environment – information flows, rewards, education, development, building and maintaining trust.
  • A shared mindset – avoiding ‘Us and Them’ thinking, developing a common identity and understanding.

3.  World of Virtual Work 3:  Management Essentials – 5 x 1 hour sessions

Content:  the workshop looks at the essential skills for a new manager, with a further emphasis on how working remotely impacts both the manager and team members.  Subjects covered include:

  • Moving up to management – leadership vs. management, management styles, the mindset of a leader, time management, energy management in a virtual world
  • Interpersonal communication – the communication process, listening, barriers to communication, social styles, cultural differences and bias and how these are impacted by working remotely
  • Delegation – what is delegation, why delegate?, why does delegation go wrong when working from home?
  • Motivation & Trust – what motivates people, types of motivation, rewards, building and maintaining trust when you are not face-to-face
  • Performance Feedback – delivering positive and negative feedback, guidelines, common feedback models that work well in a virtual world
  • Collaborating & Influencing – sphere of influence, WIIFM, influence vs. manipulation, principles of influencing others
  • Problem solving & Decision Making – team roles, problem solving approach, decision making tools and how to make these work when your team is in multiple locations

4.  World of Virtual Work 4:  Courageous Conversations – 3 x 1 hour sessions

Benefits of attending this workshop:  understand the circumstances when a courageous conversation needs to take place when working remotely; learn how people communicate differently, especially when working face-to-face is not possible; gain insights into how people behave differently when working remotely and how the styles of behaviour interact; learn how to confidently hold a difficult discussion remotely.

Content:  the subjects covered include:

  • What are  Courageous Conversations? – the types of conversation (e.g. negative performance feedback, addressing poor behaviour) and why they are hard to deal with, especially in a virtual environment.
  • Communication Styles  – the communication process, listening, barriers to communication, social styles, cultural difference and bias.
  • Behavioural Styles  – identifying styles and working with different styles where face-to-face is not possible.
  • Structure and Approach – planning for the remote conversation, what to focus on, do’s and dont’s, following up.
